Adobe launches FireFly, Text-to-Video from Runwayml (Gen2), Google's Bard is now public and more!!

Week #19

The unstoppable force that is AI just keeps pushing the limits, refusing to slow down and give us a chance to catch our breath. It's evolving at a breakneck speed, leaving us in awe of its capabilities. 🚀

What used to take years or quarters to develop can now be done in mere months or even weeks. But instead of feeling overwhelmed, let's embrace this bold and inspiring technological revolution and see where it will take us. The possibilities are endless, and the future is bright with opportunities.

You, This Week in AI subscribers, have nothing to worry about since you are subscribed to a newsletter that brings the latest and greatest to you every week! 🤖

Let’s dive in!

ThisWeek in AI - Five

1) Adobe FireFly: You know I’m an Adobe fan if you’ve followed this newsletter for a minute. Adobe is the OG of AI/ML and has used this tech to simplify and enhance photographers and artists workflows. The company recently announced their foray into generative art with FireFly. I don’t have access to the service, yet, but the art that’s coming out of this service looks FIRE! See more art from FireFly in the art section. Watch the video below to see how Adobe layers its editing tools over AI to make it a powerful AI art generation/editing tool!

2) Runwayml Gen2 (Text-to-Video): This is a great example of how AI is moving at a breakneck speed! Runway announced their G1 model and video-to-video workflows that help you stylize your videos and more and within 3-4 week they’ve advanced enough to launch Gen2 that’s capable of text-to-video! In. Less. Than. A. Month. What!!! Check out the video below.

3) PMCardio: An AI-powered class 11b certified medical device thats capable of accurately diagnosing 38 cardio vascular diseases. Users pay $24 per report and are required to buy a minimum number of reports in order to use the app.

4) Google Bard: Bard, ChatGPT competing service, is now available for public use, although there is a waitlist. I am excited to see more options and competition in this space which will drive these companies to better their product on all fronts, including safety and responsibility with AI tools. Click here to join the waiting list.

5) Nat.Dev: This service will come in handy if you are trying to compare multiple models, all at once. It enables comparison of 25 different models including models from OpenAI, Antropic, Cohere, Google, and more… Service requires registration, but it is free to use. Try it out here.

ThisWeek in AI - Interesting Reads

  • Bill Gates predicts how artificial intelligence will evolve - In a 7-page letter, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates discusses the significant impact Artificial Intelligence (AI) will have on the future. He compares its importance to the creation of the microprocessor, personal computer, internet, and mobile phone. Gates believes AI will revolutionize work, learning, travel, healthcare, and communication, reshaping entire industries. He sees potential for AI to reduce global inequality, particularly in healthcare for impoverished countries, and to transform education and combat climate change. While Gates acknowledges the potential risks of "strong AI" that could set its own goals, he reassures that recent advancements have not brought us closer to this scenario. He emphasizes the need to establish rules and guidelines for AI development, ensuring the benefits outweigh the drawbacks and that everyone has access to those benefits.

  • Artificial intelligence is not going to take all our jobs - Despite decades of predictions about technological automation leading to widespread job loss, the US economy has added 16 million jobs since 2013 and the unemployment rate has fallen steadily. A new study suggests that up to 49% of workers could have half or more of their tasks exposed to AI-powered large language models, but historical forecasts about technologically induced unemployment have often been wrong due to a lack of imagination about future jobs or worker skills. Humans have also adapted rapidly in the face of technological change, often creating new businesses and jobs. While many jobs will be susceptible to AI and automation, policymakers can use a mix of policies to better prepare the workforce of the future, including enhancing STEM education and vocational apprenticeship models.

  • Artificial intelligence discovers secret equation for 'weighing' galaxy clusters - Astrophysicists at the Institute for Advanced Study and the Flatiron Institute have used AI to find a better way to estimate the mass of clusters of galaxies. The AI discovered that by adding a simple term to an existing equation, scientists can produce far better mass estimates than before. The improved estimates will enable scientists to calculate the fundamental properties of the universe more accurately. The new equation was tested on thousands of simulated universes from the Center for Computational Astrophysics and found to reduce the variability in galaxy cluster mass estimates by around 20 to 30% for large clusters compared with the currently used equation. The new equation can provide observational astronomers engaged in upcoming galaxy cluster surveys with better insights into the mass of the objects they observe.

  • Generative artificial intelligence and copyright current issues - The rise in popularity of generative AI-powered applications like ChatGPT raises important copyright issues for individuals and businesses with respect to content creation, including the scope of rights with respect to commercial use, content publication, potential liability for infringement, and content enforcement. OpenAI's ChatGPT is capable of generating human-like text in response to any given prompt based on deep learning techniques. While terms of use address the scope of rights granted to users, potential risks of infringement still exist as AI models rely on existing content to generate content. The recent US Copyright Office decision regarding the copyrightability of an AI-generated graphic novel is instructive, with the Copyright Office requiring human authorship for creative works to be deemed copyrightable. As such, whether and to what extent companies can protect content created using ChatGPT and other similar AI tools is yet to be determined.

  • Can artificial intelligence have consciousness? - Consciousness is the subjective awareness of one's surroundings and experiences, allowing us to perceive, think, and experience emotions. The nature of consciousness remains a mystery, and there are several theories, including Integrated Information Theory, Global Workspace Theory, and Higher-Order Theory. Essential features of consciousness include subjectivity, unity, intentionality, and qualia. AI has advanced rapidly in recent years, with machine learning, natural language processing, computer vision, and robotics being some of the most significant advancements. There are two types of AI: narrow AI and general AI, with general AI being capable of performing any intellectual task that a human can. Arguments for AI consciousness include simulation theory, replicating human brain processes in AI, self-learning, and self-improving AI, and AI experiencing subjective states and emotions. Arguments against AI consciousness include the limitations of symbolic AI, the hard problem of consciousness, and ethical implications of creating conscious AI. Ethical guidelines and regulations are necessary for responsible AI development, and the development of conscious machines may have significant implications for our understanding of consciousness and the human mind.
